Advantages and Applications of Hydrophilic PES Filter Membranes

PES and PES filter membrane
Polyethersulfone (PES for short) is produced by the condensation of 4,4′-bisulfonyldiphenyl ether with diphenyl ether catalyzed by anhydrous ferric chloride. It has good chemical resistance and is resistant to general organic solvents except for chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, and acids. It’s sable to general acids, alkalis, aliphatic hydrocarbons, grease, alcohols, etc. PES has excellent resistance to acids, bases, and other inorganic drugs and solvents, but it is not resistant to polar organic solvents such as ketones, esters, halogenated hydrocarbons, and dimethyl sulfoxide. At high temperatures, these organic solvents can prompt residual stresses that trigger stress cracking, so glass fiber-reinforced PES should be used in this environment.

Hydrophilic PES filter membranes

Depending on the material, filter membranes can be divided into hydrophilic and organic membranes, which are suitable for filtering aqueous solutions (life science) and organic solutions (chemical), respectively. PES filter membranes belong to hydrophilic membranes. Hydrophilic membranes are chosen to have an affinity for water and are suitable for filtering water-based solutions. Available filter membranes are PES, MCE Nylon, etc. Also, PES membranes are generally considered more suitable for the filtration of solutions with low inorganic ions. For strong corrosive organic solvents, filter membranes made of PTFE, polypropylene (PP), etc. are generally used. In the case of protein solutions, it is necessary to choose a filter membrane with low protein adsorption, such as a PVDF filter membrane.

PES filter membranes are made of polyethersulfone microfiber hot-melt bonded together, which is a membrane material belonging to deep filtration with the following characteristics: the raw material of food-grade equivalence polypropylene, no additives in the whole production process; stable physical and chemical properties, good compatibility; with a series of pore size, high porosity, large dirt-holding capacity, reconcilable and high-temperature disinfection; good pressure resistance. PES filter membranes are highly asymmetric membranes with a distinct uniform retention layer and a pre-filtration layer of gradual pore size, with the ability to retain particles and microorganisms of various sizes. Key features include high asymmetric structure; easy water wetting; large flux; high dirt holding capacity; high mechanical strength; high porosity; low protein adsorption as well as low leachate.

Advantages of PES filter membrane

1. Optimized built-in highly asymmetric prefiltration layer for maximum flow rate and excellent dirt-holding performance.
2. Hydrophilic membrane allows for rapid and complete wetting for excellent flow rates and high throughput filtration. Easy to perform integrity testing.
3. High chemical compatibility over a wide pH range and very low protein adsorption ensure effective filtration and maximum recovery of active ingredients.
4. Compatible with standard sterilization methods such as EtO, γ-ray, and SIP/autoclave.
5. The following different pore size grades are available to meet different market demands: 0.1μm; 0.22μm (bacterial retention verification); 0.45μm; 0.65μm; 0.8μm and 1.2μm. Different diameters are also available: 13mm, 25mm, 47mm, 90mm, 142mm, and 293mm.
